Gah! Finally, here I am, going to write about the Macau-HK trip I went to with the rest of the default girls on August 2009. This trip was mainly done in order to watch Cirque du Soleil (Zaia) at the Venetian and also to finally make Daene do that bungee jump. We then decided to make a side trip to Hong Kong since we're near anyway and my friends haven't been there yet.
Being tasked as the itinerary-maker (again, let's just say that I thrive on schedules), I tried to squeeze as much as I can for the four-day trip. Sad to say I'm having trouble getting info on the public transportation routes in Macau (HK was a breeze based from my previous HK trip), good to know that Macau is a pretty small place and the cab rates are decent.
Since we arrived in Macau in the evening, we got settled and looked for some place to eat. Since it's already close to midnight at that time, we landed at a convenience store and bought noodles (we're really accustomed to the backpacker lifestyle by now). Also get to do some photo-op with the European-themed streets (gotta love the lamp posts...and people who are still hanging out at 1am). We stayed at a hotel this time (very few hostels in Macau, ugh) and warned Daene and Eds to relish the big bed since we're going to live in a shoebox in Hong Kong.
The next day, we decided to roam around the area near our hotel, in the off-chance that we might stumble upon something tourist-y. Well we came across a park (nye!) then we left the hotel to get the first free bus to the Venetian (where we stashed our bags before we went sightseeing). You gotta love those free buses.
First stop is Daene's bungee jump, which I purposely put at the top of the list so that it's over and done with, hehe. First time I saw Daene sweating a lot due to nervousness LOL (even demanded that we hug her since it might be the last time, haha). It was freaking hot that day, which we didn't expect given that time of the year, Eds and I waited at the landing area (thank God there's a shaded area nearby). Since we were a bit groggy from the heat, we didn't get to record Daene's initial jump (should've told the personnel to warn us). But seeing the whole thing was F-U-N! Too bad Daene didn't swear (was expecting her to).
We then went to Senado Square to do some sightseeing. Since most of the tourist locations can be found there, we were already satisfied with that part of that day. Especially from the fact that we're sweating buckets and there are a lot of people around, we walked as much as we can and stop periodically whenever one of us gets a headache. All of us bought identical umbrellas (lost my umbrella at the airport! Ugh) since we seriously cannot take the heat. The main focus of the day was to get a lot of Boys Before Flowers-inspired pictures (which I'll expound on in another post which you can view here), since there are two episodes in the series shot in Macau. Since Eds and I are crazy over BBF, trying to look for the shooting locations is already a given (and with much success).
Then, we went back to the Venetian, which is a splendor in itself for our backpacking sensibilities. Relished the air condition, took a lot of pictures, and went to the food court to sleep (it was only 4pm at that time but the fatigue was too much). We hung out until it's time to watch Zaia which is at 6pm. The performance was amazing, definitely worth the money considering we bought the cheapest tickets but still get to see everything on stage. My favorite was the contortionist pair hahaha. Oh and also that girl in the music booth who played a ton of wind instruments throughout the performance.
After the performance, we hurried to the ticket booth nearby to buy tickets for the boat to Hong Kong. The boat ride was very comfortable, with me hounding my friends, showing them a map of HK for our route to the hostel, and also watch the BBF interviews shown in the TV sets in the boat (I guess BBF really boosted the number of tourists).
More pics here. Will post my entry for the Hong Kong leg, BBF pics, and the explanation for the blog title soon.
TRAVEL NOTES: just a spur-of-the-moment thing, I'll be posting travel notes in some trips (like this one). These are actually notes in my small travel notebook where I keep track of my thoughts or events in the trip that I might forget later on. I'll be posting this randomly if the notes aren't too private :)
